"Surprise" Recruitment Video
Planned Parenthood of Illinois
Mixed Media, Social Good, Healthcare, Explainer, 2D Animation

The Project:
The Challenge:Planned Parenthood of Illinois faced a perception problem: most people only think of them as abortion providers, missing the wide range of healthcare services they offer. Beyond public awareness, PPIL needed to recruit healthcare professionals - a tough sell when many qualified candidates didn't understand the full scope of PPIL's mission or what it's like to work there.
Our Approach:We created a two-video mixed media animation series that took a deliberately different approach than typical healthcare marketing. Rather than the usual over-serious, clinical tone, we made something bolder, younger, and more approachable.
The first video addressed misconceptions head-on, clearing up what PPIL actually does while showcasing the breadth of services. The second focused on recruitment, highlighting why healthcare professionals should consider working at PPIL. Both used mixed media animation combining photo-realistic people with vibrant illustrations and textures in PPIL's brand colors. This showed the diversity of people PPIL serves and employs in a way that felt modern and welcoming rather than stock-footage generic.
The conversational storytelling didn't shy away from people's perceptions - it acknowledged them directly, then showed the reality. No corporate hedging, no medical jargon, just straight talk about healthcare access.
The Result:Two videos that helped PPIL communicate their full mission while recruiting healthcare talent. The videos ran on social media (full and cutdown versions), at trade shows, and in recruitment efforts. The visual style and approach established a template PPIL continues to use - we've created additional projects using this same mixed media aesthetic and conversational tone that connects with audiences.
